Gahn Dancer II
About Apache Mountain Spirit Dancer or Gahn Dancer II
The Gahn, represented today by the Mountain Spirit Dancers, continues to play an important role in Apache life. Energetic dances summon the Gahn’s power and are accompanied by singing, music and costumes. The Gahn demonstrated the lifeway to the Apache and gave them strong medicine to fight disease and rituals to invoke blessings. Eventually, the Apache acted badly and the Gahn left to live in the mountains.
Craig Dan Goseyun
Craig Dan Goseyun was born in Hawaii and a member of the San Carlos Eastern White Mountain Apache. Craig learned the Apache ways from his grandfather and elders and comes from a family of visionaries. He would wander the hills envisioning large monumental sculptures honoring his traditions and sacred past. Craig has attended many of the ceremonies where the Apache imitate the dress and dance of the Gahn. Craig has another, bigger display of the Apache Mountain Spirit Dancer at the Plaza at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Craig enjoys Michelangelo’s work and also admires Japanese sculpture. In 2000, Craig was called upon by Disney World Productions to sculpt a special theme at their facility in Osaka, Japan.
