The Great Whaleboat Race 2026

🗓️ August 29, 2026

About the Campaign:

Three Towns. Three Whaleboats. One Legendary Mission.

On August 29, 2026, history comes alive on the water as Matawan, Aberdeen, and Keyport unite for one of the most spirited America 250 events in New Jersey.

In honor of Captain William Marriner's daring 1778 whaleboat raid, the Matawan Aberdeen Historical Society has joined forces with Matawan Borough, Aberdeen Township, Keyport Borough, and the Keyport Historical Society to stage a Revolutionary-inspired showdown on Lake Lefferts. Teams of first responders from each town will row across the lake to a floating dock, "capture" their town's mayor, and race back to shore, recreating the bold spirit of Marriner's real raid launched from Matawan to capture Loyalist New York City Mayor David Mathews nearly 250 years ago.

The first crew to return their mayor and hoist their town's flag on the banks wins the coveted Golden Oar Trophy, proudly displayed in their town hall until the next challenger comes along.

Date: Saturday, August 29, 2026

Location: Lake Lefferts, Matawan, NJ

Beyond the race itself, expect a full day of family fun: live music, food, kids' activities, and plenty of hometown pride on the water. This is a celebration of community, history, and the towns that have shaped this corner of New Jersey for generations.

A special thank you to Keyport Mayor Rose Araneo, Matawan Mayor Joseph Altomonte, and Aberdeen Mayor Greg Cannon for lending themselves, quite literally, to this historic event.

  • 🏅 Cheer on your town's first responders as they race for glory
  • 🎶 Enjoy live music and family activities along the lake
  • 🇺🇸 Be part of a once-in-a-generation America 250 celebration
  • 🏆 Watch history decide who takes home the Golden Oar Trophy
